Cold weather barramundi

A 98cm, 15kg barra by Peter Huf, from China, fishing with River and Reef Fishing Charters

We are having a proper dry season this year, with some cold weather – “cold” by NT standards means 13C in Darwin overnight, although it is plenty colder than that as you move inland.

As soon as the water gets cold everyone uses it as an excuse for not catching barramundi, but this picture, a fish caught yesterday, shows the barra are still biting in the billabongs, if not as furiously as they were a month ago.

An albino barramundi

Albino barramundi

Yep, it’s an albino barramundi, caught in Queensland. You don’t see these too often – you would think he would have stood out like a beacon when small, and been eaten by another fish, given that barramundi are cannibals.

Maybe the other fish thought he was too weird to eat 🙂
